The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has struck down a request by 16 political parties to indefinitely postpone the local government elections scheduled for November 16.
In a ruling on the suit filed by Action Alliance and 15 other parties against the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice T.A. Okunsokan held that the commission did not act unlawfully in fixing the election date without consulting the parties, according to Channels TV.
The court found no provision in the constitution or electoral laws requiring the state electoral umpire to consult political parties before setting election dates.
Additionally, the court rejected the parties’ argument that the Ondo State governorship elections, scheduled for the same day, justified postponing the Ogun local government elections.
With this ruling, the November 16 election date remains unchanged. The Ogun State local government elections will proceed as planned, with 20 local government areas and three senatorial districts (Ogun Central, Ogun East, and Ogun West) participating.
