Courier firms smuggle arms, drugs across country, NIPOST warns

The Nigerian Postal Service has expressed serious concern over the growing trend of illegal courier services being used to smuggle weapons and illicit drugs into the country under the guise of delivering goods.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, Ondo State, the General Manager of NIPOST’s Courier and Logistics Regulations Department, Oludotun Sounde, warned that the unchecked activities of these unauthorized operators now endanger both national security and the economy.

Sounde revealed that NIPOST had recently sealed two unlicensed courier outfits in the state and confiscated motorcycles from three others caught operating illegally.

He said these rogue companies often lack the structural framework for secure deliveries and operate without oversight or accountability.

“They’re putting customers at risk of loss, theft, or abuse of their parcels. Using an illegal courier service is like going to a quack doctor. It could also cost you dearly,” Sounde stated.

According to him, one of the unlicensed firms was apprehended while transporting firearms and hard drugs, a troubling indicator of how criminal elements are infiltrating the logistics sector.

Describing the situation as a “national red flag,” Sounde warned that parcels handed over to unregistered courier services could pose a serious threat to public safety.

He emphasized the need for all logistics and courier businesses to obtain licenses from the Postmaster General, which will help enforce regulations and improve the safety and efficiency of the delivery industry.

Reiterating NIPOST’s resolve to clean up the sector, Sounde said the agency is ready to support legitimate operators with training and professional oversight.

He underscored NIPOST’s role as a vital part of the country’s communication infrastructure, helping to connect communities safely and securely.

Sounde also encouraged both established and upcoming logistics businesses to complete their registration either through the NIPOST website or any nearby post office.

He cautioned Nigerians to steer clear of suspiciously cheap courier services that cannot be traced, stressing that a well-regulated delivery system is essential for safeguarding the country and boosting economic development.
