A commercial bus accident at Alausa, Ikeja, left four passengers injured on Sunday after the driver, allegedly intoxicated, lost control and rammed into a streetlight.

The incident involved a fully loaded Lagos-colored bus with registration number KTU 69 YJ.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver showed clear signs of intoxication before the crash. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, confirmed these accounts, stating that preliminary investigations indicated the driver was heavily under the influence of alcohol.

“The ferocity of the impact triggered widespread alarm and resulted in significant injuries to several passengers, notably a couple seated in the middle row,” Bakare-Oki said. He commended the prompt response of LASTMA officials, who rescued the injured and provided on-site emergency care.

The injured victims—a couple, a male passenger, and a female passenger—were stabilized and transported to the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being taken to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at Toll Gate for further treatment. Other passengers escaped without serious injuries.

Bakare-Oki strongly condemned drunk driving, reiterating LASTMA’s commitment to combating the issue. He highlighted the agency’s ongoing “Don’t Drink and Drive” campaign, conducted by its Monitoring and Surveillance Unit, which actively educates drivers in motor parks across Lagos.
