A couple, Idris Adeyemo (36) and Zainab Adeyemo (31), alongside Kafaya Bakare (40), were on Thursday arraigned before a Mapo Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of breach of peace, assault, and threat to life. Chief Magistrate O.O. Latunji granted each defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with one reliable surety and adjourned the case until June 24 for hearing.

According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Oluseye Akinola, the incident occurred on May 14 in the Felele area of Ibadan, Oyo State. The defendants reportedly engaged in an altercation with their co-tenant, Amoke Oseni.

Akinola stated that when a police officer from the Felele Police Station arrived to intervene, Idris obstructed the officer from performing his lawful duty of arresting Zainab.

“Idris assaulted the arresting police officer, using all sorts of abusive language and threatened to decisively deal with Oseni, the complainant,” the prosecutor said.

The charges contravene Sections 249, 351, and 416 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The case continues as the defendants await trial.
