COAS visits Oba of Lagos, seeks collaboration

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, paid a visit to the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Akiolu I, at the Iga Idugaran Palace.

The visit was aimed at fostering stronger ties between the Nigerian Army and traditional institutions, as well as expressing gratitude for the monarch’s unwavering support.

During the visit, Shaibu highlighted the significant role the Oba has played in supporting the Army formations in Lagos, referring to him as a “consistent fatherly figure.”

He stated, “We are here to express our profound appreciation to Your Majesty and the council of Obas. Our customs and traditions are sacrosanct, and as we carry out our duties, we must continue to honor them. Your guidance and goodwill have been invaluable to our operational and civil–military cooperation efforts.”

In his response, Oba Akiolu praised the Nigerian Army for its unwavering dedication to the stability of Nigeria.

“The Army remains a major pillar on which this nation stands. Your officers continue to make sacrifices every day, and their professionalism has contributed immensely to maintaining peace,” the Oba said.

The visit is part of the Nigerian Army’s broader effort to strengthen relationships with traditional institutions, which are considered vital in fostering cooperation between the military and communities, particularly in the realm of national security.

Shaibu’s visit comes at a time of heightened security concerns, including the recent deadly attack on the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.

In the wake of that attack, Shaibu called on Nigerians to continue supporting the military’s fight against terrorists, bandits, and other security threats.

He stressed the importance of a collective effort in combating insecurity, underscoring that communities, traditional leaders, and citizens all play a vital role in aiding security agencies.
