Inter Miami boss, Javier Mascherano, praised his team as he acknowledged the strength of their opponents, Al Ahly, after both sides played out a goalless draw in their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup opener at the Hard Rock Stadium.
The match offered contrasting displays from both teams across the two halves. Al Ahly dominated the opening 45 minutes and nearly took the lead, but Mahmoud Trezeguet’s 43rd-minute penalty was denied by Inter Miami’s goalkeeper.
In the second half, the MLS outfit turned the tide and created better chances, gaining more control.
Reflecting on the encounter, Mascherano admitted his players were affected by the pressure in the early stages but expressed satisfaction with how they recovered.
“I’m happy with the performance. We were better in the second half. In the first, we lost a few balls and gave away too many transitions where they were dangerous,” said the former Argentina international.
“In the second half, we created chances, controlled the game, and had opportunities to win it. That’s football.
“We knew we were up against a strong team…The nerves and anxiety played a trick on us in the first half. But we had our chances to win. The team left a very good impression. This is the path forward… playing like this, we can beat anyone.”
Mascherano also singled out Lionel Messi for praise, commending the veteran’s enduring passion for the sport.
“It’s admirable how much love Messi has for the game. After all the matches he’s played, he’s still here, giving his all,” he said. “Of course, we wanted to win, but I’m happy with the team’s performance today.”
The result leaves both sides with a point apiece in their opening Group A fixture, with plenty still to play for as the tournament progresses.
