The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, is set to swear in Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on Wednesday.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Courtroom Two of the Supreme Court complex in Abuja, according to an official statement released on Sunday.
Before his elevation, Oyewole served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal and was the Presiding Justice of its Enugu Division. His appointment forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s judiciary and improve the delivery of justice at the apex court.
The National Judicial Council had recommended Oyewole for the position alongside several other nominees for different judicial offices following its 110th meeting held in January and chaired by the Chief Justice.
In the statement signed by the Supreme Court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Festus Akande, the appointment was described as a move to enhance the court’s capacity.
“The swearing-in of Justice Oyewole represents a further step in reinforcing the Supreme Court’s ability to deliver fair, prompt and credible judgments,” the statement said.
The court noted that Oyewole’s years of service at the appellate court demonstrated his legal competence and commitment to justice.
“His elevation reflects the judiciary’s resolve to strengthen the bench with experienced jurists who uphold integrity, professionalism and the rule of law,” the statement added.
The court also described the ceremony as part of broader efforts to rejuvenate the judicial system and maintain high standards of impartiality and competence.
Invited guests were advised to comply with the court’s security and procedural guidelines ahead of the event.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed its commitment to judicial independence and to ensuring that justice is delivered in a timely and fair manner to Nigerians.
