American singer Chris Brown was arrested in Manchester, England on Thursday morning, May 14, in connection with an alleged nightclub assault that occurred in London two years ago.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on February 19, 2023. “The investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit,” police told The Sun.
The arrest stems from allegations that Brown attacked music producer Abe Diaw during a party at The Tape nightclub in London. Diaw claims Brown hit him multiple times in the head with a tequila bottle before punching and kicking him while he was on the ground.
Diaw required hospital treatment for his injuries and reportedly needed crutches during his recovery. In 2023, Diaw told reporters: “He’s making out it was one of his entourage but it was him. I’ve spoken to the police and they hope to resolve the matter soon.”
After the alleged incident, Brown left the UK and had not returned until this week. He reportedly flew into Manchester on a private jet on Wednesday, May 13. Police arrested him at the Lowry Hotel where he was staying.
Brown is currently being questioned by investigators and has not yet publicly commented on the arrest or the allegations.
In addition to the criminal investigation, Diaw has filed a $16 million lawsuit against Brown over the alleged assault. That civil case remains ongoing.
This arrest adds to Brown’s history of legal troubles, which includes his 2009 felony assault conviction for attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna. Authorities have not yet indicated whether formal charges will be filed in this latest case.
