Chelsea to donate Club World Cup bonus to Diogo Jota’s family

Chelsea’s players are set to donate part of their Club World Cup bonuses to the family of the late Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva.

As reported by The Athletic, the Blues secured a £11.4 million ($15.5m) bonus pool for winning this summer’s Club World Cup under Enzo Maresca.

The amount will be shared equally among the squad, but in a remarkable gesture, the players and the club have agreed to send an equivalent sum to the family of Jota, who tragically died alongside his brother in a car accident in July.

The passing of the two brothers has left the football world in deep shock. Liverpool have already announced several tributes, including a memorial sculpture for Jota at Anfield and the permanent retirement of his No.20 shirt.

The Reds’ players will also wear a ‘Forever 20’ badge on their shirts and jackets for the upcoming season, mirroring the class and solidarity shown by Chelsea’s move.

Ahead of their Premier League opener against Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday, Liverpool will hold a minute’s silence and unveil a special fan mosaic in Jota’s memory.

The game is expected to be an emotional occasion for both the team and supporters.

While Liverpool focus on their poignant start to the campaign, Chelsea will host London rivals Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge two days later as they begin their own league season.
