Chelsea are reportedly on the verge of securing the signature of promising young striker Liam Delap, with only a few formalities remaining before a long-term deal, estimated at £30 million, is officially sealed.

Transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano, revealed on Thursday that the Blues are preparing to activate Delap’s release clause, with final negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives nearly finalized.

The deal is expected to be completed in time for the 21-year-old to be included in Chelsea’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Romano posted, “Chelsea are closing in on Liam Delap deal as details of the long term contract are being completed with his agents. Enzo Maresca appreciation + UCL football made the difference as Chelsea are set to activate £30m release clause. #CFC just wait for formal communication now.”

Delap, who netted 12 goals in 37 Premier League games last season while playing under Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town, has opted to join Chelsea despite speculation linking him with a return to Manchester City.

Though City retained a £40 million buy-back clause, they decided not to pursue the forward following Ipswich’s relegation.

The presence of new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, coupled with the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League, is believed to have swayed Delap’s decision to head to Stamford Bridge.
