Chelle confident as S’Eagles face S’Africa in crucial W’Cup qualifier clash

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has said his squad is fully locked in on the crucial World Cup qualifier against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, brushing aside surrounding controversies.

The Eagles, chasing their third victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, will battle South Africa in a matchday eight fixture at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

Chelle: Eyes on the Job

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Chelle stressed his team’s readiness, “I’m focused on my players and my team. South Africa is a strong side, with quality players and good technical staff. But this is a big game, and my players are excited to step up. This is a chance to do something special.”

Mokoena Controversy Looms

The buildup to the encounter has been overshadowed by the unresolved case involving Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who reportedly featured in the qualifier against Lesotho despite being ineligible.

While many in Nigeria argue FIFA has not handled the issue properly, Chelle refused to be distracted, though he urged football’s governing body to act fast.

“There’s an organisation called FIFA, and they must manage this situation quickly. For me, my priority is my players. They are focused and want to deliver here in Bloemfontein.”

Osimhen Ruled Out

Nigeria will miss the services of star striker Victor Osimhen, who limped off injured in the 1-0 win over Rwanda last weekend.

Chelle, however, expressed confidence in the depth of his squad.

“Osimhen is a big star, no doubt, but I also have a strong team. These boys are ready to give everything once again.”

The stage is set for what promises to be a fiery clash, with Nigeria hoping to keep their qualification charge firmly on track.
