The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has pledged sustained welfare programmes for retired members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, including improved healthcare and access to low-interest loans.
Oluyede gave the assurance on Friday during an interactive meeting with military veterans from the South-West at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army’s 2 Division, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan, Oyo State.
He said the Federal Government remained committed to improving the living conditions of retired military personnel in recognition of their contributions to national security.
“Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten by the nation. The Federal Government remains committed to improving the welfare of veterans in appreciation of their sacrifices,” he said.
The defence chief explained that the recent salary increase for serving military personnel had also resulted in adjustments to veterans’ pensions.
He assured the retirees that the military leadership was working to address concerns arising from the pension adjustments while pursuing additional welfare measures.
Oluyede disclosed plans to designate at least one hospital in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to provide specialised medical care for veterans.
“Among these is my determination to dedicate at least one hospital in each geopolitical zone specifically to cater for the medical needs of veterans, in addition to existing healthcare arrangements,” he stated.
According to him, the collection of relevant data is ongoing, while the necessary procedures for implementing the initiative are at an advanced stage.
The CDS also revealed that efforts were underway to establish a low-interest loan scheme to help retired military personnel establish businesses and pursue other productive activities after leaving service.
He further highlighted the Defence Headquarters Online Shop, developed in partnership with Konga, as another initiative aimed at improving the welfare of military personnel and veterans.
Oluyede said the military was working to expand the scheme by involving more major businesses to provide discounted goods and services.
He urged retired officers to remain actively involved in promoting peace and security in their communities and to continue supporting serving personnel through prayers and other forms of assistance.
During the meeting, the veterans raised concerns about their entitlements, welfare packages and administrative challenges, with the CDS and other senior military officials providing clarifications.
Those present to address the issues included the Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Gideon Kachim; the Commandant of the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, Air Vice Marshal N.I. Iloh; and the Chairman of the Military Pensions Board, Major General J.E. Osifoh.
In his remarks, the President of the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association, Major General H.A. Salihu (retd.), appreciated the CDS for engaging with the veterans.
He also encouraged retired personnel to continue using dialogue to resolve concerns affecting their welfare and entitlements.
