Nigeria’s U-19 women’s basketball team endured a heavy setback on Sunday, falling 113–42 to a dominant Canadian side in their second Group B matchup at the ongoing FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Buoyed by a narrow 93–88 victory over China the previous day, the Nigerian squad entered the court with momentum, but Canada quickly dashed any hopes of back-to-back wins.
The North Americans were in complete control from tip-off, dictating the pace and outclassing their African opponents in all four quarters.
They set the tone early, racing to a 23–5 lead in the first quarter, before widening the gap to 62–16 by halftime. By the end of the third, the score stood at a staggering 85–32.
Canada, who had previously thrashed Portugal 88–49 in their opener, now sit comfortably atop the group with two wins from two.
For Nigeria, the focus now shifts to a crucial clash against Portugal on Tuesday, July 15, as they aim to bounce back and keep their knockout stage hopes alive.
In the group’s other fixture on Sunday, Portugal pulled off a 75–52 win over China, setting up a must-win encounter against Nigeria.
