CAF postpones Super Falcons, Cameroon friendly clash

The international friendly between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon will now go ahead on Tuesday (tomorrow), June 3, at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.

This follows a decision by the Confederation of African Football to reject a proposed date change to Monday.

The Super Falcons had initially announced a shift in the fixture to Monday via their official X handle, but confirmed a reversal of that decision on Sunday.

“Our friendly against Cameroon will now be held on Tuesday, June 3 at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta, following a late request from FECAFOOT,” the team announced.

CAF did not approve the new date suggested by both the Nigeria Football Federation and the Cameroonian Football Federation, leading to a return to the original schedule.

The match had always been slated for Tuesday, June 3, but was briefly moved to Monday, June 2, after the cancellation of the initial leg, which was supposed to take place on Saturday, May 31, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

That game had to be called off due to the late arrival of the Cameroonian team, who only made it to Ikenne on Friday night, leaving insufficient time for match preparations and recovery.

The travel-related setback left both sides with no option but to scrap the first leg and focus on the remaining fixture.

In response, the Super Falcons announced a new date of June 2 for the match. However, CAF stood firm, stating that the game must go ahead on its originally approved date, Tuesday, June 3.

The Cameroonian squad is now based in Ijebu Ode, where they’ve begun training sessions in preparation for the clash in nearby Abeokuta.

Tuesday’s match will mark the Super Falcons’ first outing since a narrow 1–0 defeat to France in a friendly last November. It is also an important fixture in their buildup to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

While Cameroon will not feature at the upcoming WAFCON, they remain a longstanding rival. Nigeria enjoys a dominant record in recent encounters, with the Lionesses failing to score in their last six meetings and not recording a win over the Falcons since 2012.
