The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed that one person died and three others sustained injuries during a gun battle with armed robbers in Apo Resettlement, Abuja.
Police Spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh disclosed this in a Sunday statement, providing details of the incident which occurred around 10:30 p.m. on June 23, 2025, at Zone E, Apo Resettlement.
“Upon receiving a distress call from a motorcyclist reporting an ongoing robbery in the area, police operatives promptly responded and engaged the armed assailants in a gun duel,” Adeh stated.
“During the encounter, three individuals sustained varying degrees of injury. Regrettably, one later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. A vehicle belonging to one of the victims was recovered from the scene.”
Adeh revealed that a joint operation involving police and local vigilantes is underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The Command also addressed a viral video where a religious leader falsely claimed one congregant identified the robbers as “herdsmen children” while accusing police of abandoning the scene.
“These claims are entirely false and grossly misleading,” the police countered. “Such statements, especially from influential platforms, can undermine public confidence in law enforcement, spread fear, and derail ongoing security efforts.”
The police urged religious leaders and the public to verify information through official channels before making public comments. They also called on the cleric to encourage the cited church member to provide useful information to aid investigations.
Reaffirming their commitment to public safety, the FCT Police Command advised residents to remain calm, vigilant, and report suspicious activities while relying only on verified police updates.
