The remains of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, will be interred on Tuesday, July 15, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has confirmed.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Katsina State Government House on Monday, Governor Radda said all necessary arrangements for the burial had been concluded in consultation with Buhari’s family and close associates in London.
He said, “The burial arrangement for our father, the late president, who passed on yesterday in a hospital in London, has been concluded. After consultations with his family and those around him in London, we have agreed that his body will arrive Katsina by 12 noon tomorrow. The burial will then take place in Daura at about 2 pm.”
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss, the governor extended condolences to the late president’s family, the people of Nigeria, and the current administration.
“On behalf of myself, the people, and the government of Katsina State, we commiserate with the family of the late president and indeed all Nigerians, particularly His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over the passing of his predecessor,” Radda added.
“May Almighty Allah grant us the strength to bear this monumental loss.”
Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital at the age of 82, served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
Following the announcement of his death, President Tinubu directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.
Security has been tightened in Daura ahead of the burial, with hundreds expected to attend the Janazah (Islamic funeral prayer) scheduled to hold shortly after the arrival of the late statesman’s body.
