Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and his wife Maria Lúcia Alckmin arrived at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday morning, kicking off the second session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism.
The landmark visit signals a major step forward in Nigeria’s South-South diplomatic relations, with expectations of far-reaching policy agreements.
The high-level Brazilian delegation was welcomed by Nigeria’s Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, alongside key cabinet members including Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Maiha, and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Senator Abubakar Kyari.
Senator Hadejia hailed the visit as “a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s renewed hope agenda,” stressing the strategic value of strengthening Nigeria-Brazil relations. “This dialogue mechanism represents our commitment to leveraging South-South partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to our citizens,” he stated. “Brazil’s expertise in agribusiness, energy transition, and industrial development aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s transformation priorities and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
The three-day summit will feature the signing of more than 30 Memoranda of Understanding spanning critical areas such as defence cooperation, agricultural technology transfer, energy collaboration, and cultural exchange programs. The agreements aim to foster deeper economic and technical ties between the two nations, building on shared developmental goals.
This high-profile engagement underscores Nigeria’s push to diversify international partnerships while tapping into Brazil’s advanced capabilities in key sectors central to President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda.
The SDM talks are expected to produce concrete frameworks for bilateral cooperation that could reshape trade and investment flows between Africa’s largest economy and Latin America’s industrial powerhouse.
