The Borno State Government has apprehended no fewer than 73 children involved in drug abuse, in a concerted effort to stem the rising tide of substance misuse among minors in Maiduguri.
The crackdown, led by the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, saw the children—aged between 12 and 15, picked up from hotspots including Bulabulin Kasuwa and Gwange Kasan Gada.
This intervention followed the viral circulation of a disturbing video showing a young boy, barely in his teens, candidly admitting to drug use, sparking public outcry and prompting swift governmental action.
According to the ministry, the operation marks a significant step in addressing not only substance abuse but also the growing exposure of young children to criminal elements in the streets of the state capital.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, disclosed that the rescued children have been moved to the Bulumkuttu Rehabilitation Centre in Maiduguri, where they will receive professional care.
Gambo explained that the children would undergo “comprehensive rehabilitation, counselling, and reintegration programs under the care and supervision of the Borno State Government.”
In her address to the children prior to their transfer, she expressed grave concern over the surge in drug use among minors, emphasizing the administration’s resolve to protect its youth.
“You are still very young, and you deserve a better life than this. We are not here to punish you, but to support you. The Borno State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, is committed to giving you another chance to live a meaningful and responsible life,” she stated.
Gambo further pledged that the ministry would intensify efforts in identifying and rescuing more at-risk children.
She noted that the government would work collaboratively with security agencies, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, and NGOs to tackle the underlying causes of substance abuse and child endangerment across the state.
