The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the deadly explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, was carried out by a Boko Haram suicide bomber.
The blast occurred on Wednesday evening during Maghrib prayers at the Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque, located in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. Initial reports indicated multiple casualties, sparking fear across the city on Christmas Eve.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, said preliminary investigations showed that the attack was executed by a Boko Haram terrorist who detonated an improvised explosive device.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians at the scene,” Uba said.
He disclosed that security forces swiftly moved in to contain the situation and prevent further attacks.
“Troops, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, other security agencies, the Borno State Government and the National Emergency Management Agency, responded immediately by securing and cordoning off the area to ensure public safety,” he added.
According to the army, a total of 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries in the attack.
The victims were rushed to the General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Uba further confirmed that two of the injured later died in the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition.
“Two of the injured civilians were later confirmed dead at the hospital, while two others are currently in critical condition. The remaining victims are stable and receiving appropriate medical care,” he said.
The army spokesperson assured residents of Maiduguri and surrounding communities that security has been intensified, especially during the festive period.
“Troops and other security agencies have increased surveillance and strengthened security measures within Maiduguri and its environs to guarantee the safety of residents,” Uba stated.
The attack adds to concerns over renewed insurgent activities in parts of the North-East, despite ongoing military operations against Boko Haram and its affiliates.
