The White House on Monday addressed growing concerns regarding President Joe Biden’s health, which were sparked by a New York Times report revealing that a specialist in Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Kevin Cannard, had visited the White House at least eight times between August 2023 and March 2024.
The New York Times report noted that Dr. Cannard, from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, had made multiple visits to the White House, including a notable meeting with President Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, in mid-January. While visitor logs confirmed Cannard’s presence, the exact nature of these visits was not detailed.
In response to these revelations, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre provided clarification during a press briefing. Jean-Pierre emphasized that President Biden is not being treated for Parkinson’s disease and is not on any related medication.
“Has the president been treated for Parkinson’s? No. Is he being treated for Parkinson’s? No, he’s not. Is he taking medication for Parkinson’s? No,” Jean-Pierre stated. She explained that President Biden had only seen a neurologist as part of his routine annual physical exams.
White House spokesperson Andrew Bates further elaborated that specialists from Walter Reed regularly visit the White House to provide medical services for military personnel stationed there. Dr. O’Connor confirmed that Dr. Cannard was part of a team conducting routine neurological clinics at the White House Medical Unit, a practice that predates the pandemic and is primarily for active-duty personnel supporting White House operations.
The concern over Biden’s health was amplified by a June 2023 debate performance that led to speculation about his cognitive abilities. In subsequent interviews, Biden addressed these concerns by revealing that he had undergone cognitive tests and denied any health issues affecting his performance.
The handling of Biden’s health disclosures has been a point of debate, with initial reports suggesting that there was no post-debate medical evaluation. However, Biden later clarified this in discussions with governors, reinforcing his commitment to transparency.
Amid these discussions, official statements from the White House continue to affirm President Biden’s overall health and suitability for office. As the administration deals with these health-related inquiries, the role of specialists like Dr. Cannard remains a focal point for public and media scrutiny regarding Biden’s health and fitness for office.
