Besiktas fire Solskjær after Conference League playoffs defeat

Besiktas have parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjær with immediate effect after a string of poor results, the Turkish giants confirmed on Thursday.

The news was first revealed by football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, on his X account.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjær has been sacked by Besiktas with immediate effect,” Romano reported.

The decision came on the back of a costly defeat to Swiss side Lausanne in the UEFA Conference League play-offs, which denied the Istanbul outfit a place in European competition this season.

The loss added to the mounting pressure on Solskjær, prompting the board to act swiftly.

The 52-year-old Norwegian was appointed in January and managed to guide Besiktas to a fourth-place finish in the Süper Lig last term.

However, this season’s underwhelming start and the European exit proved decisive.

Confirming the development, Besiktas issued a statement, “Our contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a decision made at a board meeting.

“Following the meeting, our chairman, Serdal Adalı, thanked Solskjaer for his services to date.”

The club has already begun the hunt for a new head coach, with former Borussia Dortmund midfielder and manager Nuri Sahin emerging as an early candidate. Still, no official appointment has been made.

Besiktas supporters will now be keeping a close eye on the board’s next move as the club looks to bring in a manager capable of reviving their title ambitions.
