The Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, has assured residents of Darazo Local Government Area of the state government’s commitment to restoring peace following recent violent clashes between farmers and herders.
During a meeting held on Sunday with stakeholders, security agencies, and leaders of the affected communities, Governor Mohammed acknowledged the deep-rooted nature of the conflict and vowed to adopt inclusive measures to prevent further violence.
“We need to come together and appreciate each other,” the governor stated. “We will work with all leaders, including the district heads and community elders, to find a lasting solution to this problem.”
The governor strongly condemned the violence and urged both farmers and herders to exercise calm and refrain from taking the law into their hands. He assured that efforts were underway to mediate and reconcile the aggrieved parties through dialogue and mutual understanding.
To address one of the major drivers of the conflict—land disputes—Governor Mohammed announced the formation of a committee of land officers. The committee will oversee land allocation and ensure the rights of all parties, including both farmers and herders, are protected.
“We will not tolerate any breakdown of law and order. Decisive actions will be taken against anything that threatens the peace of our state,” he emphasized.
The intervention comes in the wake of repeated clashes in Darazo, where disputes over land use have led to physical confrontations and injuries. Farmers in the region have accused herders of grazing on cultivated lands, while herders claim they are losing access to traditional grazing routes.
Governor Mohammed’s administration has reiterated its resolve to foster peaceful coexistence through mediation and inclusive governance.
“The priority is to maintain unity and ensure that no group feels neglected,” he added. “We are one people, and we must find a way to live peacefully.”
