Atletico Madrid to sign Chelsea’s defender Renato Veiga

Atletico Madrid are edging closer to securing the signing of Chelsea’s Renato Veiga, according to Football Espana, as the Spanish giants ramp up their defensive rebuild ahead of the new season.

The Portuguese defender, known for his versatility, has reportedly emerged as the preferred option to bolster Diego Simeone’s backline.

Atletico had previously set their sights on Tottenham’s Cristian Romero, described as the “dream” addition this summer.

However, Spurs’ firm stance on a reported €70 million valuation has led the Colchoneros to turn their focus to Veiga.

Following a disappointing collapse at the tail end of last season, Atletico are determined to fortify their defence further, despite already signing Robin Le Normand. Veiga is now seen as a prime candidate for that reinforcement.

Initial links to Veiga surfaced over the weekend, and journalist Florian Plettenberg has since revealed that personal terms between the player and Atletico are nearly agreed.

Bayern Munich are also reportedly keeping tabs, should Atletico fail to finalise the deal.

Transfer expert Matteo Moretto added that “Veiga has already said yes to joining Atletico Madrid,” although the final agreement between the clubs remains pending.

Chelsea, now Club World Cup holders, are believed to be open to selling the 20-year-old. While L’Equipe reports that Atletico have lodged a second bid of €35 million, the Premier League side are holding out for at least €40 million, potentially including performance-related variables.

While Romero was targeted as a defensive leader capable of elevating the squad’s level immediately, Veiga is seen as a long-term investment, one with the potential to grow into a cornerstone of Atletico’s future backline.
