Exactly 30 years after lifting their last major trophy, Aston Villa finally returned to the European summit with a commanding 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League final at Besiktas Park.
Wearing an all-white strip in honour of the club’s famous 1982 European Cup-winning side, Villa wasted no time asserting themselves.
Just two minutes into the contest, Morgan Rogers tested Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with a powerful strike that forced an early save.
Freiburg, playing in the first European final in their history, nearly responded through Nicolas Hofler, but the midfielder dragged his effort wide of Emiliano Martinez’s post.
Villa’s superiority eventually paid off late in the first half as Unai Emery’s side struck twice within seven minutes to seize complete control of the encounter.
The breakthrough came from a brilliantly executed set-piece routine. Morgan Rogers picked out Youri Tielemans from a short corner, and the Belgian midfielder expertly volleyed the floated delivery low beyond Atubolu.
Villa doubled their advantage in stoppage time with an outstanding goal from Emiliano Buendia.
The Argentine turned sharply on the edge of the area before curling a superb effort into the far corner, sending the Villa supporters into wild celebrations.
Any hopes of a Freiburg comeback disappeared shortly before the hour mark when Rogers added a third. Buendia’s low cross found the forward, who darted ahead of his marker to guide the ball home from close range.
Although Freiburg managed to avoid further damage, Villa continued to threaten through Buendia and John McGinn as Emery’s men comfortably saw out the contest.
The triumph not only secured Villa’s first European trophy in 44 years but also marked Emery’s fifth UEFA Europa League title, capping off a remarkable campaign that also saw the club finish inside the Premier League’s top five.
