Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen’s Ecuadorian defender, Piero Hincapie, as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his backline with a left-footed option before the transfer window closes.
Arsenal’s Interest in Hincapie
According to BBC Sport, the 23-year-old has been closely observed by Arsenal’s recruitment team.
The Gunners are keen to reinforce their defensive options, and Hincapie has emerged as a priority target.
The centre-back, who is understood to be open to a move away from Leverkusen, currently has a €60 million (£52m) release clause in his contract.
Hincapie’s Time at Leverkusen
Since arriving at the BayArena in 2021, Hincapie has established himself as a mainstay in the German side’s defence, racking up 166 appearances across all competitions.
He played a key role in Leverkusen’s historic 2023–24 campaign, where the club lifted both the Bundesliga and the German Cup, going the entire league season unbeaten.
Arsenal Balancing Incomings and Outgoings
Despite already spending over £200 million this summer on Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, and Martin Zubimendi, Arsenal are looking to balance the books through player sales.
Oleksandr Zinchenko, Reiss Nelson, and Fabio Vieira are among those tipped to depart.
Polish defender Jakub Kiwior is also attracting attention, with Porto reportedly interested in securing his services.
Tottenham Links Downplayed
While Tottenham Hotspur have previously been linked with Hincapie, reports now suggest Spurs are not currently interested in him, leaving Arsenal in pole position.
Strong Start to the Season
Arsenal’s strong opening to the Premier League campaign has further boosted optimism among fans.
Arteta’s men edged Manchester United 1-0 on opening day before thrashing Leeds United 5-0, a run that sees them sit top of the table.
