Troops of the Nigerian Army have eliminated a notorious terrorist commander, identified as Amirul Fiya, also known as Abu Nazir, during a fierce battle in the Balge Local Government Area of Borno State. Several of his fighters were also killed in the operation.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the troops recovered a cache of weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, two rocket-propelled grenades, and an unexploded ordnance.
“On 7 August 2025, our troops at Forward Operating Base Rann Kala in Balge repelled an attack by ISWAP/JAS terrorists,” Anele said. “At first light, our forces discovered the bodies of three terrorists, including their top commander, Amirul Fiya, also known as Abu Nazir. Blood trails at the scene indicated that others escaped with gunshot wounds.”
In a follow-up operation on 9 August, the troops, working with the Civilian Joint Task Force and Hybrid Force, found another terrorist corpse and recovered additional arms, including a QJC 88-barrel gun, an AA gun tripod, and 20 rounds of 12.7 x 108mm ammunition.
Anele further revealed that in Zamfara State, troops of 1 Brigade Combat Team 2 responded to credible intelligence about terrorist movements along Road Gusau–Kaura Namoda in Kaura Namoda LGA.
“The quick action of our troops forced the terrorists to flee, leading to the rescue of two kidnapped victims who have since been reunited with their families,” she said.
The Army spokesperson added that in Ebonyi State, troops of the 24 Special Engineer Regiment intervened in a communal clash between the Iyimagwu and Ekpomaka communities in Ikwo LGA on 9 August.
According to her, “Our soldiers came under fire from an abandoned building, returned fire, and neutralised one armed suspect. We recovered a G3 rifle, 50 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, 16 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and four hand grenades.”
Lieutenant Colonel Anele reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to working closely with other security agencies to maintain peace and security across the country.
