Army arrests soldier over alleged killing of Adamawa phone repairer

The Nigerian Army has taken into custody one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Ahmed Aminu, in connection with the death of a phone repairer, Alkasim Ibrahim, in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, July 4, 2025, has drawn widespread outrage from residents and human rights groups, prompting demands for a transparent and impartial investigation.

Confirming the development, Lieutenant Adebayo Adewumi, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 23 Armour Brigade, Yola, said the soldier is currently under military custody as investigations into the incident continue.

“The Nigerian Army is deeply concerned about the reported incident. The soldier involved has been apprehended, and a comprehensive investigation is underway to uncover the facts surrounding the unfortunate event,” Adewumi stated.

He reiterated the Army’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, emphasizing its commitment to upholding professionalism, discipline, and the rule of law.

“Misconduct in any form is unacceptable within the ranks of the Nigerian Army. We assure the public that due process will be followed, and the findings of the investigation will be made public,” he added.

The Army also called for calm, urging citizens to refrain from speculation or actions that could threaten public order. It emphasized its dedication to transparency, justice, and national service.

Meanwhile, the death of Ibrahim has sparked grief and anger in Mayo Belwa, with community members and advocacy groups demanding justice.

“We demand an independent investigation into this killing. The rights of civilians must be protected, even in the presence of military personnel,” said a representative of a local civil rights group who preferred anonymity for fear of reprisal.
