Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has officially accepted his appointment as the Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, promising to bring ideological clarity and people-centered leadership to the party.

Aregbesola, a prominent political figure and former Minister of Interior, made the announcement via his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

He cited the lack of ideological commitment among Nigeria’s mainstream political parties as a major reason for accepting the role.

“It is with deep humility, a profound sense of duty, and unwavering hope for our people, nation, and party that I accept this appointment,” Aregbesola said.

“Our current political landscape is dominated by parties that operate like empty shells—merging and splitting not on principles or policy, but solely for the pursuit of power.”

He emphasized that political parties should not serve as personal vehicles for ambition, but as “living institutions built on values, guided by ideals, and accountable to the people.”

Drawing inspiration from South Africa’s African National Congress Aregbesola noted that although not perfect, the ANC remains an example of a party grounded in ideology and committed to social justice and equity.

“Nigeria’s political system is in urgent need of parties with character, purpose, and soul. Our goal is to build a political institution that champions democracy, upholds the rule of law, promotes transparency, and puts the welfare of the people above all else,” he added.

He also stressed the importance of learning from global best practices in party organization, referencing countries like Sweden, Chile, Kenya, and South Africa.

“We must be a party that not only talks about education but builds schools; that supports real security policies; that believes in job creation and works daily to achieve it,” Aregbesola said.

The former governor concluded by calling on party members and Nigerians to support the vision through active participation and accountability.

“Hold me accountable. Challenge me when I stray. Let us together rebuild a party that truly serves the people and restores dignity to Nigerian politics,” he said.

The ADC leadership welcomed Aregbesola’s acceptance, describing it as a turning point for the party as it seeks to position itself as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
