APM Terminals Apapa has achieved its highest monthly export volume since commencing operations in 2006, handling 8,687 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of export cargo in April 2025.
This represents a 30 per cent increase compared to the 6,606 TEUs recorded in April 2024, according to a company statement released on Sunday.
Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen attributed the growth to Nigeria’s expanding export sector, stating, “It’s advantageous for Nigerian shippers when ships depart our ports fully loaded with exports. Preventing ships from leaving empty positively influences the overall cost of shipments into Nigeria.”
Knudsen highlighted strategic improvements at the terminal, including:
– A new rail service (launched February 2025) to accelerate cargo movement from inland regions to Apapa Port
– Expanded yard capacity for exports
– Dedicated truck lanes to reduce processing time and ensure timely shipments
“Our aim aligns with the Federal Government’s vision of transforming Nigeria into an export-driven economy,” he added.
The terminal has seen consistent export growth in recent years:
– 2022: 53,807 TEUs
– 2023: 70,432 TEUs (31% increase)
– 2024: 77,631 TEUs (10% increase)
Knudsen acknowledged the Nigerian Ports Authority and Nigerian Railway Corporation for their support, stating:
“Their unwavering support enables us to focus on delivering top-tier services to our customers.”
