The Anambra State Government has officially renamed its newly-commissioned Government House Mini City in Awka to “Light House Awka” in alignment with the state’s slogan, “Light of the Nation.”
The renaming was one of several major decisions reached at the 10th Executive Council meeting of the state government, held on Monday, June 2, 2025.
The session marked the third meeting conducted in the new administrative hub.
Speaking in a press statement released on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, said the name was chosen after careful deliberations among council members.
“After deliberating over a suitable moniker, ANSEC christened and proclaimed the new Anambra Government House Mini City ‘Light House Awka,’ in keeping with Anambra State’s slogan, ‘Light of the Nation,’” Mefor stated.
He added that the council also used the opportunity to reflect on recent developments and reforms under Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, aimed at restoring moral order, deepening institutional reforms, and delivering sustainable infrastructure.
“The council explored how to completely restore Anambra society, reshape its moral and social structures, and establish the project as a lasting legacy of the Soludo administration,” Mefor said.
In another bold policy move, the state government resolved to seize any premises being used to harbor child beggars, in accordance with the provisions of the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025.
“Going forward, buildings used as holding places for child beggars will be sealed and confiscated. This is to reinforce our zero-tolerance stance on child abuse and trafficking,” Mefor emphasized.
The council also approved the immediate establishment of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission, following the recent signing of the Anambra State Electricity Law. Recruitment has commenced to onboard technical experts into the commission.
In terms of infrastructural investment, several contracts were awarded, including the construction of a warehouse for pharmaceutical-grade kaolin processing in Ukpor and the installation of a 750 KVA transformer to power the facility. Additionally, new operational uniforms and gear will be procured for the state’s Ocha Brigade to enhance their functionality.
Dr. Mefor also commended the successful celebration of this year’s International Children’s Day, held at Solution Fun City, noting that the children conducted themselves responsibly throughout the event.
