The Anambra State Government has approved the sum of N9.72 billion for the execution of several key infrastructural and development projects across the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, made this known on Tuesday while briefing journalists in Awka on the outcomes of the 11th State Executive Council meeting.
According to Mefor, the funds are earmarked for contracts covering erosion reclamation, flood control, school reconstruction, and road rehabilitation projects.
Among the approved projects is the construction of access roads within the Nwafor Orizu College of Education, which will cost N2.10 billion. The council also approved N3.5 billion for the construction of a 2.28-kilometre Umunze–Umuchu bypass, along with comprehensive erosion and flood control measures in the area.
Additional projects include the construction of 3.9 kilometres of access roads within the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli Campus, which is to be undertaken at a cost of N2.65 billion. The completion of the Country Club at the Ekwulobia Stadium Complex was also approved, with an allocation of N528.6 million.
The State Executive Council further sanctioned N97.31 million for the rehabilitation of Nya Ranch Road, located beside the Old Government House in Awka, and an additional N65.68 million for supplementary works at the Specialist Hospital in Fegge.
“ANSEC approved N55.18 million for the installation of road signs, rumble strips, flashing caution lights, and thermoplastic speed bumps and N718.68 million for reconstruction and renovation of dilapidated buildings at Nwafor Orizu College of Education,” Mefor said.
Dr Mefor also announced the approval of a new initiative known as the Anambra Rebirth Programme, which aims to promote behavioural change by restoring Igbo cultural values of integrity, discipline, and hard work.
“More public schools that had not received enough attention would now get it, following the Soludo administration’s clearing of inherited counterpart financing arrears up to 2024,” the commissioner added.
He further disclosed that the state government is planning a new policy that will see the training and retraining of drivers in Anambra, with a blacklisting system to be introduced for those who commit major traffic violations.
