Alaafin urges acting IGP Disu to reform police, protect rights

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has urged the newly appointed acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to restore public confidence in law enforcement and place the protection of human rights at the centre of his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a congratulatory message conveyed through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaye, the monarch advised the acting IGP to focus on safeguarding innocent citizens, upholding the rule of law and pursuing reforms that would entrench professionalism, accountability and community-driven policing within the Force.

Oba Owoade noted that as Disu takes over the mantle of leadership, he inherits both the achievements and challenges of the Police institution.

He expressed hope for his success, emphasising that his stewardship would significantly affect the lives of everyday Nigerians and the broader stability of the country.

The monarch said, “As you settle down, sir, I urge you to be professional and write your name in gold by giving us the new police Nigerians are craving for, in order for the police to gain the trust of society.

“Your career has been a shining beacon of courage and resilience. It is a call to service that you are exceptionally prepared for.

“It is expected that your leadership will bridge the gap between the Police and the community, fostering a safer, more secure and citizen-friendly environment.

“You have consistently chosen service over self, setting a high standard for integrity and courage. Your dedication, discipline and hard work have paid off in this well-deserved appointment.

“As you step into this commanding role, may your leadership continue to prioritise the protection of the innocent and the steadfast upholding of the rule of law.

“The nation looks to you for a safer tomorrow. As you take the helm, I am confident that your strategic vision will steer the Nigeria Police Force towards a new era of proactive policing, enhanced security and public trust.”

The monarch further stressed that rebuilding trust in the Police would require concrete steps to protect citizens’ fundamental rights.

He maintained that respect for human rights would encourage the public to report crimes, thereby strengthening justice delivery and crime prevention nationwide.

To achieve this, Oba Owoade called on the acting IGP to set up functional human rights desks across all police stations, state commands and zonal commands in the country.

He said such desks should be staffed by competent personnel with a clear mandate to address allegations of rights violations.

He also extended his congratulations to the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, commending what he described as “his distinguished service,” and acknowledging his “decades of dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening internal security.”
