Akwa Ibom village head arrested for allegedly shooting sister

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the village head of Ibagwa community in Abak Local Government Area for allegedly shooting his 32-year-old sister during a family dispute.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Uyo.

According to the police spokesperson, the incident occurred on September 6 at about 2:30 p.m., when a family member reported that the traditional ruler had shot their sister in the head with a gun.

“The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital. She is responding to treatment and currently in stable condition,” John said.

John further explained that the police recovered a single-barrel gun suspected to have been used in the attack. Preliminary investigations, she noted, indicate that the violence was triggered by a misunderstanding over palm fruits.

“The suspect is in custody and will face prosecution once investigations are concluded,” the PPRO added.

A resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed shock at the development. “We never imagined our village head would be involved in something like this. It’s very sad, especially since it happened within his own family,” the resident said.
