Akpabio debunks rumours of new states creation

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has refuted claims circulating on social media that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states in Nigeria.

Addressing the matter during plenary on Tuesday, Akpabio stated that although the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 separate requests for the creation of new states, none has gone through the full legislative process required for such approval.

“We have received more than 42 proposals concerning state creation, but none has reached the stage of full deliberation,” Akpabio explained.

“The process of creating a new state in Nigeria is highly rigorous, and no proposal has yet completed that process.”

His comments came in response to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), who drew attention to misinformation being shared across digital platforms.

Akpabio cautioned individuals and communities against convening meetings or mobilizing support based on the assumption that any new states have been legally established.

“Let me be clear: no new state has been approved by the Senate. I advise Nigerians to rely solely on official communications from the National Assembly on matters relating to constitutional amendments and state creation,” he warned.

Meanwhile, the Senate has scheduled a special session for Wednesday to pay tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, reflecting on his legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s national development.
