Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress in the early hours of Friday, June 6, 2025.

The high-profile ceremony, held at the Akwa Ibom State Government House in Uyo, was monitored by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from his Lagos residence.

The event was attended by prominent APC leaders, including Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Bassey Otu of Cross River, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, and Monday Okpebholo of Edo. Also present was Mrs. Ekaete Unoma Akpabio, wife of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Governor Eno, in his announcement, stated: “After completing the rounds of my consultation as your servant whom you have elected to serve, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the APC.”

His defection is expected to trigger a major political realignment in Akwa Ibom, with reports indicating that 31 local government chairmen, state lawmakers, and most commissioners are set to follow him to the APC.

However, not all officials have embraced the move. Dr. Ini Ememobong, Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, resigned from his position, citing personal convictions that prevent him from joining the APC.
