The Adamawa State Government has provided emergency relief supplies to 7,220 internally displaced persons affected by recent communal violence in Lamurde Local Government Area.

Dr. Celine La’ori, Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Yola on Monday.

The displacement crisis followed violent clashes between the Chobbo community and Bwatiye communities in Bachama Kingdom, which began on July 7 and escalated on July 11. In response, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri imposed a 24-hour curfew on the local government area to restore order.

According to La’ori, the relief package included essential food and non-food items: “rice, maize, vegetable oil, season cubes, spaghetti, mats, blankets and soap.”

The violence caused significant destruction, with La’ori reporting that “more than 489 houses were burnt down, 68 people sustained injuries while five lives were lost.”

To address the humanitarian crisis, ADSEMA established temporary camps in Gamadiyo and Gyawana communities to shelter the displaced persons. The camps are being managed jointly by ADSEMA staff and the Red Cross Society.

La’ori commended Governor Fintiri for his swift response: “We appreciate the governor for the immediate release of the relief items and measures put in place to restore peace in the area.” She also appealed to wealthy individuals to support the relief efforts, calling on them “to provide succour for the IDPs.”

The state government continues to work with security agencies and community leaders to maintain peace in the affected areas while addressing the immediate needs of displaced families.
