Dinamo Zagreb handed Sunderland their first defeat in the UEFA Europa League this season after securing a 2-0 victory at the Stadium of Light on Thursday.
First-half goals from Luka Stojkovic and Dion Drena Beljo proved decisive as the Croatian side condemned the Black Cats to a disappointing night in front of their home supporters.
Sunderland, managed by Regis Le Bris, had entered the encounter unbeaten in their opening three matches of the competition but struggled to contain Dinamo’s attacking threat in the opening half.
The visitors took the lead in the 22nd minute after Sunderland failed to clear a corner properly.
Granit Xhaka’s attempted header fell to Stojkovic, who controlled the ball with his chest before unleashing a superb volley from the edge of the penalty area into the net.
Dinamo nearly extended their advantage shortly afterwards, but Thomas Meunier made a crucial goal-line clearance to prevent Sunderland from falling further behind.
The Croatian visitors eventually doubled their lead in the 39th minute following another defensive lapse by the hosts.
Stojkovic delivered a clever pass into the path of Beljo, who timed his movement perfectly before finishing to make it 2-0.
Sunderland improved after the break and increased the pressure in search of a comeback.
Wilson Isidor appeared to have reduced the deficit, but his effort was disallowed for offside.
Despite their second-half efforts, the hosts failed to find a breakthrough as Dinamo Zagreb held on for a deserved victory.
