Lagos installs boundary signposts to prevent disputes with neighbouring states

The Lagos State Government has begun installing boundary signposts across the state to prevent encroachment and reduce disputes between neighbouring communities and adjoining states.

The initiative was announced by the state Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development in a statement shared on Facebook on Monday.

The ministry said the exercise was designed to promote peaceful relations among border communities and ensure that officially recognised boundaries were clearly identified.

Speaking at the commencement of the project, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Kikelomo Bolarinwa, said the government was committed to ensuring that boundary markers reflected the official records of the Office of the Surveyor-General.

She said, “Clear boundaries between communities and neighbouring States are properly indicated in line with the position of the Office of the Surveyor-General.”

Bolarinwa explained that the installation of the signposts would help prevent encroachment and ensure that residents of border communities were properly recognised for government welfare programmes.

According to her, the initiative would also support infrastructure development, improve living conditions, strengthen local economies and discourage rural-to-urban migration.

The permanent secretary urged residents to protect the installed signposts and avoid actions capable of causing tension or disrupting public order.

She warned that the government would sanction anyone found destroying the structures.

“The State Government will not be lenient with anyone who hampers social order, peaceful co-existence and the ease of business that Lagos State is known for,” she said.

Bolarinwa added that the government would continue to extend the benefits of its T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda to communities across the state, particularly rural areas.

The ministry said the project was part of efforts to advance Lagos State’s ambition of becoming a 21st-century economy while promoting the development of a Greater Lagos.

Locations where boundary signposts have been installed include Eredo-Epe, around Mojoda, Itokin-Ijebu Ode Road, Ikorodu-Shagamu Road, Ojodu-Alagbole Road, Owode-Apa Road and the Seme border.
