American rapper Nicki Minaj has praised President Donald Trump, crediting him with changing the country’s atmosphere as she joined him at a campaign rally in Michigan ahead of the November midterm elections.
Minaj made the remarks on Sunday in Port Huron, where she encouraged voters to support Republican candidates contesting various positions.
She described the moment as critical for the United States, saying Trump had given Americans “a future to look forward to.”
“We really need all these great people to be elected, because this is a major turning point for our country,” the rapper said.
Minaj, who arrived in Michigan aboard Air Force One with Trump, also led supporters in chanting the president’s name alongside those of Republican candidates.
Trump later commended the musician, describing her as intelligent and complimenting her appearance as she left the stage.
The rapper has previously identified herself as Trump’s “number one fan,” although she has criticised some of his policies during his first administration.
She has also expressed support for some of his positions, including his claims concerning the persecution of Christians in Nigeria and his proposed gold card visa programme for wealthy individuals seeking residency in the United States.
The rally comes amid an intensifying political contest ahead of the November midterm elections, with Republicans and Democrats seeking to secure control of Congress.
During his address, Trump criticised Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed over his Muslim faith and background, alleging that his election would lead to jihadists entering the country.
El-Sayed has described similar remarks by Trump as Islamophobic, arguing that the president is using his identity to divert attention from the rising cost of living and the effects of government policies.
Former President Barack Obama also campaigned alongside El-Sayed on Saturday, underscoring the high stakes of the Michigan race.
The campaign appearances reflect broader efforts by both political parties to mobilise supporters as they compete for congressional seats in the upcoming elections.
