Sowore returns to Nigeria, resumes 2027 presidential campaign

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has returned to Nigeria from the United States to continue his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Sowore announced his return in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday, saying he was pleased to be back with his family and in the country after spending more than 20 months in the US.

He said his departure from Nigeria was prompted by what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by security agencies.

While in the US, Sowore said he interacted with Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders on the country’s situation and his political agenda.

He also disclosed that he participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued campaigning for voting rights for Nigerians living abroad.

The AAC candidate reiterated his support for diaspora participation in Nigeria’s democratic process, saying an AAC government would introduce diaspora voting if elected in 2027.

Sowore said he was expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos before proceeding to Abuja, where he would also continue attending court proceedings over the cybercrime case filed against him by the Department of State Services in 2025.

He said his return would usher in a fresh phase of his nationwide campaign, with plans to engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities across the country.

“I plan to engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities across the country,” he said.

According to him, the engagements would centre on the political, social and economic issues outlined in the AAC’s 2027 agenda, including equal rights, justice, peace, security and economic development.

Sowore said the 2027 election would give Nigerians an opportunity to determine the direction of the country’s political leadership.

“My campaign will continue to advocate fundamental political, social and economic transformation,” he said.

The AAC candidate added that he would continue taking his campaign directly to Nigerians across the country.

“I will continue the campaign and engagements with Nigerians as the 2027 election approached,” he said.
