Police detain 6,240 suspects, rescue 211 kidnap victims in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has disclosed that it detained 6,240 suspects and rescued 211 kidnapped victims during 17 months of security operations across the state.

The Punch reported that the command also recovered 156 firearms, 1,486 rounds of assorted ammunition and 209 vehicular exhibits, including cars, tricycles and motorcycles, within the period.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, made this known in a statement issued on Saturday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa.

Giwa presented the figures while receiving the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, AIG Miller Dantawaye, who paid a working visit to the command on Friday.

The CP said the suspects detained included 158 kidnapping suspects, 186 armed robbery suspects, 188 murder suspects and 57 suspects for rape and defilement.

He added that the command also detained 273 suspects linked to cultism and 63 suspects for unlawful possession of firearms.

Giwa said the remaining 5,315 suspects were detained for various other offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism.

On the weapons recovered, the commissioner disclosed that they included 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle, alongside other firearms.

He attributed the command’s achievements to “sustained intelligence-led operations, proactive policing and effective security collaboration with neighbouring states.”

Giwa also highlighted the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit, intensified border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative, as well as improved emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre.

The commissioner appealed for continued support from the police zone, particularly in manpower, operational logistics and personnel welfare, to enable the command to sustain its security gains.

Responding, Dantawaye urged officers and men of the command to maintain professionalism, discipline, accountability and ethical conduct in the discharge of their duties.

He also directed the personnel to adhere strictly to Force regulations and respect the rights of citizens.

The AIG encouraged the officers to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and work towards maintaining public confidence in the police.

Dantawaye further expressed his readiness to collaborate with the command to strengthen security across Enugu State.
