Basketball: South Korea beat D’Tigress in World Cup opener

Nigeria’s D’Tigress opened their 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup campaign with a disappointing 99-81 loss to South Korea in Berlin, Germany, on Friday.

The African champions struggled to contain South Korea’s attacking display as their opponents took control of the game and maintained the advantage for most of the contest.

D’Tigress attempted to stay within reach, but South Korea continued to punish lapses in Nigeria’s defence while sustaining pressure on the offensive end.

Despite their efforts to reduce the deficit, Nigeria were unable to produce the turnaround needed as South Korea eventually secured an 18-point victory.

The defeat also means D’Tigress are still searching for their first win in their opening game at the Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to their next Group B fixture against Hungary.

A victory in that encounter will be crucial for D’Tigress as they look to recover from the opening-day setback and strengthen their chances of advancing to the knockout stage.
