The Oyo State Government has commenced enforcement of its house-to-house waste collection policy, warning residents, businesses and other property owners that failure to comply with waste disposal regulations could lead to the closure of their premises.
The Punch reported that the enforcement operation, which started on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, is being carried out by environmental officials from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this on Wednesday during the official flag-off of the exercise.
He explained that the initiative was aimed at ensuring compliance with the state’s waste management regulations and addressing the environmental, aesthetic, economic and public health risks associated with indiscriminate waste disposal.
According to Aderinto, officials would inspect residential buildings, commercial properties and other establishments to verify whether they had appropriate waste bins and were registered with approved waste consultants operating in their designated areas.
“Residents, businesses and other establishments are expected to have proper arrangements for the disposal of their waste,” Aderinto said.
He stated that properties without the required waste bins or adequate waste collection arrangements would first receive abatement notices, after which owners or occupants would be given 48 hours to rectify the situation.
“Buildings found without the required waste bins or proper waste collection arrangements will be served abatement notices and given a 48-hour grace period to comply,” he said.
The commissioner warned that premises whose occupants failed to meet the requirements within the stipulated period would face enforcement measures, including closure.
“Failure to comply within the stipulated 48 hours will attract enforcement action, including the closure of defaulting premises,” Aderinto warned.
He said the enforcement would continue across the state until the government achieved the desired level of compliance with its waste management regulations.
Aderinto urged residents and business owners to obtain appropriate waste bins and engage only waste consultants approved and assigned to their respective areas.
He also called on residents to report accredited waste collectors who fail to evacuate waste as required to the relevant authorities.
“Residents should report any accredited waste collector who fails to evacuate waste as required to the Ministry or the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority,” he said.
The commissioner further disclosed that waste consultants found breaching the regulations would also face sanctions, which could include the withdrawal of their operating licences.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving waste management and maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment across Oyo State.
The ongoing exercise is expected to cover homes, commercial facilities and other establishments as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen waste collection and disposal.
