LASU probes alleged missing results as students face delayed graduation

The management of Lagos State University has commenced an investigation into allegations that some lecturers failed to upload students’ examination results, potentially leaving affected students unable to graduate as scheduled.

The university disclosed this in a response to concerns raised on social media on Saturday, following allegations that some students had been affected by missing results dating back to their 300-level studies.

The controversy gained attention after an X user alleged that more than 100 students were unable to graduate because results were allegedly not uploaded by a lecturer.

Responding to the allegation, LASU management said, “The attention of the University Management has been drawn to this allegation, and the matter is currently being looked into. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.”

The allegations suggested that some students could be forced to spend an additional academic year despite having completed the required courses, owing to outstanding results reportedly not reflected in the university’s records.

Another X user, @TheAjakeManger, subsequently claimed that the problem extended beyond the students initially mentioned.

The user alleged that some affected students had been threatened and that students currently in 400 level were also experiencing similar difficulties.

“Dear @jidesanwoolu, they are now threatening the students and it’s not just this set that are affected. The current 400l are also facing the same setback,” the user wrote.

The same account further alleged that more than 1,000 students across the 200, 300 and 400 levels in the department were facing related academic challenges.

Two lecturers have been mentioned in connection with the allegations circulating online. However, LASU has not established any wrongdoing against them, as the university said its investigation is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Akinteye Babatunde, said NANS and the Joint Campus Committee, Lagos Axis, had commenced discussions with the university management over the matter.

Babatunde appealed to affected students to remain calm, saying the university had given assurances that the issue would be resolved.

“To all LASU students that are affected with this, please remain calm as discussions have been opened with the management by the leadership of NANS and JCC Lagos Axis,” he said.

He added, “The management has assured us of resolving the issue next week, so please remain calm and don’t take actions that will be counterproductive.”

The university is expected to communicate the findings of its investigation and outline steps to resolve the concerns raised by the affected students.
