Gombe varsity ASUU suspends planned strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Gombe State University branch, has suspended its planned total and indefinite strike, giving the state government and university management until October 2026 to fulfil agreements reached with the union.

The Punch reported that the decision followed a congress meeting held by the union on Friday, August 21, 2026, and was contained in a resolution signed by the branch chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and secretary, Aliyu Shelleng.

During the meeting, the congress considered a letter from the Gombe State Government concerning the commencement of the implementation of a new salary structure for academic staff.

It also reviewed a Memorandum of Understanding reached with the university management on the payment of outstanding arrears owed to members.

After deliberations, the union resolved to suspend the planned industrial action to allow both the government and university management to demonstrate their commitment to the agreements.

“The Congress, after extensive deliberations, resolved to suspend the planned commencement of the industrial action in order to give both the government and the university management the benefit of doubt on the implementation of the promises by the end of October 2026,” the statement read.

However, ASUU stressed that the suspension was conditional on the implementation of the agreements within the stipulated timeframe.

“The Congress also resolved to proceed with the planned industrial action in the event of a failure to implement the content of the documents,” it added.

The union’s decision effectively gives the state government and university management until the end of October to meet their commitments, failing which the suspended strike could be revived.
