Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has hailed the election of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association, describing her victory as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s legal profession.
The Punch reported that in a statement issued on Monday, Sanwo-Olu said Badejo-Okusanya’s emergence as only the second woman to lead the NBA underscored her years of distinguished legal practice, professionalism and steadfast commitment to justice and the rule of law.
“Congratulations to Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on her historic election as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
“Becoming only the second female president in the history of the NBA is no small feat and is a well-deserved milestone.
“Over the years, she has built a reputation for excellence, legal precision and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
“Her rise to the leadership of the bar reflects decades of hard work and relentless dedication to justice,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor said Badejo-Okusanya’s election was a moment of pride for the legal community and a source of encouragement for young women in Lagos and across Nigeria who aspire to leadership roles.
He expressed confidence that her administration would strengthen the legal profession and promote justice nationwide.
“I have full confidence that her tenure will bring visionary leadership and advance the cause of justice in our society.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I wish her a successful and impactful term in office,” he added.
Badejo-Okusanya secured victory in the 2026 NBA national officers’ election after polling 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 per cent of the total ballots cast. She defeated Lateef Akangbe, SAN, who received 7,934 votes, while Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, garnered 5,855 votes.
She is expected to serve a two-year tenure from 2026 to 2028, taking over from the outgoing NBA President, Afam Osigwe.
Her election makes her the second woman to occupy the association’s highest office, following Priscilla Kuye, who served as NBA president between 1991 and 1992.
