Again, multi-vehicle crash triggers gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A fresh road accident occurred at Kara Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, adding to growing concerns over safety on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways after the third major crash at the location within a week.

Photographs obtained from the scene on Monday morning showed an articulated truck, a Toyota pickup and a Honda car involved in the latest collision.

The Toyota pickup sustained heavy front-end damage, while a Honda car was also damaged in the crash. The articulated truck remained at the scene as motorists gathered to assess the situation.

Although the cause of the accident had yet to be confirmed, traffic officials had not released details on casualties or injuries as of the time of filing this report.

The latest crash comes after a string of serious accidents that recently disrupted traffic around the bridge.

Earlier, a trailer loaded with bags of flour overturned after striking the bridge’s guardrail.

Emergency responders rescued the driver, who suffered serious injuries, while preliminary investigations pointed to overloading as the likely cause of the crash.

Another incident followed days later when five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna collided, leaving one person dead and another injured.

While rescue workers were clearing the wreckage, a commercial bus crashed into the scene on the Lagos-bound carriageway in what officials attributed to brake failure.

The repeated accidents have once again drawn attention to longstanding concerns about the safety of heavy-duty vehicles using the expressway.

Road users believe frequent cases of speeding, poor maintenance, overloading and brake failure continue to endanger lives despite previous warnings by traffic authorities.

Commuters have urged the Federal Road Safety Corps and other relevant agencies to strengthen enforcement against traffic violations, particularly involving articulated vehicles, while calling for stricter inspections to ensure only roadworthy trucks operate on the corridor.

Kara Bridge serves as a critical gateway linking Lagos with Ogun State and other parts of the country, making any disruption along the route capable of triggering widespread traffic congestion and economic losses.

Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously, obey speed limits and expect delays around the bridge as officials continue to monitor the situation.
