Death toll from Syria bus crash hits 35

A bus collision in central-eastern Syria has left 35 people dead, with 30 others injured, according to updated figures released by state media on Saturday.

The SANA news agency, citing a Health Ministry official, said the crash occurred on the Damascus-Deir Ezzor highway.

According to Syria’s Interior Ministry, one of the buses was transporting security personnel, while the other was carrying civilian passengers. However, the ministry did not specify how many of those killed or injured were members of the security forces.

State media footage showed one of the buses engulfed in flames, with debris scattered across the highway following the collision.

The latest tragedy comes weeks after another fatal road accident in southern Syria’s Daraa province, where five people, mostly Lebanese pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia, were killed and dozens injured when their bus overturned. Provincial authorities had suggested speeding may have contributed to that crash.

Years of civil war and neglect have left much of Syria’s road infrastructure in poor condition, with many highways requiring urgent repairs.

Last year, at least 12 people were killed and several others injured when a bus collided with an oil tanker in northeastern Syria.
