Team Nigeria endured a disappointing start to the individual events at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after swimmer Clinton Opute and boxer Ayomide Foly Hassan failed to progress beyond the opening stages of their respective competitions.
Opute placed sixth in his heat of the men’s 200m individual medley after posting a time of 2:15.40, falling short of the qualifying mark required to advance to the next round.
Although he missed out on qualification, Opute’s race marked the beginning of Nigeria’s participation in the individual events, with more athletes expected to compete in different sports as the Games continue.
In the boxing event, Hassan’s campaign ended in the men’s 70kg category after he lost 4-0 on points to Lesotho’s Refiloe Thai in their Round of 32 contest.
Thai controlled the bout with a disciplined and calculated display to secure his place in the Round of 16, ending the Nigerian’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
While the result brought Hassan’s Commonwealth Games journey to a close, his determined performance highlighted the resilience and commitment of Team Nigeria’s boxing contingent.
