Germany have appointed Jurgen Klopp as their new national team coach, entrusting the former Liverpool manager with the responsibility of reviving a side that has endured another disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.
Renowned for his achievements with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, Klopp had been in discussions with the German Football Association before agreeing to take charge of the four-time world champions.
“It’s a big honour to be sitting here,” Klopp said. “I had an idea how big the job of national team coach is, but when you’re being directly connected with it, you really feel the scale and the responsibility even more.”
Klopp resigned from Liverpool in 2024, citing exhaustion after a highly successful spell at Anfield. Speaking during negotiations with the DFB, he said he now feels “recharged” and ready for a fresh challenge.
The 59-year-old also stated on Friday that he would walk away from the role without demanding compensation if things do not go according to plan. He further warned that he would resign if the media failed to “leave my family in peace”.
Germany have handed Klopp a contract running through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, placing one of football’s most accomplished managers in charge of rebuilding the national team.
Since 2025, Klopp has served as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer, overseeing the company’s football operations, including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf revealed that no conventional release clause would be paid to Red Bull. Instead, the federation will donate one million euros ($1.14m) to the Red Bull-backed Wings for Life Foundation, which funds research into spinal cord injuries.
As part of the agreement, Germany will also stage three international matches in Leipzig, home of Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.
The appointment follows the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann after Germany’s disappointing exit from this year’s World Cup, where they were beaten by Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the round of 32.
The latest setback extended Germany’s struggles on the global stage. Since lifting their fourth World Cup trophy in 2014, the Germans have suffered first-round eliminations in 2018 and 2022 before this latest early exit.
They have managed only one knockout victory across their last five major tournaments, reaching the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on home soil.
Klopp enjoyed impressive spells with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund before transforming Liverpool into one of Europe’s dominant clubs.
He guided the Reds to their first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020 and also delivered the club’s sixth UEFA Champions League crown.
His first assignment as Germany coach comes quickly, with four UEFA Nations League fixtures scheduled within 11 days against the Netherlands, Greece
